If you ask most people they would agree that "windows ME" was pretty pants.
Like many others I'm considering a new machine and the big question Is to Vista or not?

It's acceptable for teething problem with drivers ect on a new operating system but once again I refer to the windowsME disaster.

Who here thinks that Vista will pick Itself up? (maybe It should have already) or Is It looking grim for the future of Vista?

My memory of the WindowsXP journey Is cloudy. Did It start off as bad or as bad as people are claiming with Vista?

I recently upgraded to Vista when I built my new rig - so far I've had no problems. My old keyboard and mice, webcam etc all work fine even though Logitech have yet to release official Vista drivers for them.

Vista is getting better and as more people move to it more drivers will appear. However XP is in the position of been 100% compatible so if you have the time to fiddle around with the few things that won't work then its great otherwise stick to XP.

Despite what I'd heard before I upgraded I've been gaming fine performance may not be as good as XP but I think in time as more games support Vista things will even out.

I dont really think it has to pick itself up, hardware vendors and software manufacturers have to catch up with more compatable drivers etc,

In my experience vista is great, i havent booted to xp in over 2 months now, and have all my devices working, webcam and tv card included although i had to pemanenetly disable driver signing as im using x64.

Sure games dont perform as well but to be honest when using a 8800gtx 5-10 frames is no great loss for me and dose not make me want to go back to xp, Plus the driver are improving on a weekly basis at the moment

I think it does have things that have to be addressed in service pack, the first of which should be this year.

As for you new machine, you will have vista up and running in an hour, XP will take about 3 with all the updates and further faffing around.

Yup, despite my issues with Vista I think it'll eventually become at least as good as XP is now. I seem to remember having similar trouble with XP in the beginning, and I didn't adopt that as early as I've adopted Vista.
Have to say tho, my recollection of ME was that it was actually quite good. I think I'm pretty much alone in that though :)

No problems with Vista here except some drivers were very late.

However it's kinda a given that if you have an nVidia card you're going to have a harsher time of it in Vista than with ATi.

Much of the problems with Windows Me were a result of the OS itself and the inability of MS to resolve them all, for whatever reason. Vista itself appears very solid (lessons learnt from XP I imagine), and as said already, it's the hardware and software developers that are letting the entire thing down. I'd love to hear what their excuses are - fair enough if MS weren't being co-operative enough in giving them what they needed to get ready for Vista, but I personally doubt that's the case.

As such, the future for Vista isn't grim at all. They've brought in some nice new stuff so that people feel their money is being well spent, while keeping it similar enough to XP so that they should feel fairly comfortable switching.

XP was just as rough - if not more so - when it first came about. It was nowhere near as stable as it is today and driver/software support was perhaps even more lacklustre. Vista seems to have the benefit that many apps designed for XP work with it, whereas XP had comparatively few 98 applications that would run without issues.
