Hi all,

I have just become the proud owner of VISTA ANTISPYWARE 2010

Anyway, i have manually deleted it from my system, using regeidt in safe mode, and deleted the av.exe file.

I have a small but anoying problem, if i try to open any of my programs such as firefox or AVG etc, i get an error message " This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action, ........."

The program(s) run ok if i right click and run as administator or click start.

Anyway to solve this

Cheers

Safe mode "first"?. Nope, no offence m8 but all anti spyware scans should be run in Safe Mode and with System Restore switched off.

Try SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition, hasn't failed me yet.

no offence taken m8 :p

That's your opinion. In my opinion the only reason to run a malware scan in safe mode is when it won't run in normal mode. Running in normal mode, more of the infected items will be loaded in memory/registry etc and will be easier to detect.

In fact, its recommended - especially on the Malware Bytes forums - to run in scans in normal mode wherever possible as the scanning is more effective.

Hence, I run in safe mode first for badly infected PC's (IE ones which won't even launch exectuables and prevent mbam explicity from launching) and then run a 2nd scan in normal mode afterwards.

Good point, and taken. :)

I've always ran such scans with Sys Restore turned off and in Safe Mode though, just to be on the safe side ( no pun intended! :p ).

OP: Just go to add/remove programs and set up the defaults again or just repair each installation that is broken by running the add/remove installer on there.

Malwarebytes recommends running it in normal windows before trying safe-mode, apparently it's designed to be ran when not in safe-mode and allegedly works better.

I tried malwarebytes first, but had to remove it manually in safe mode using regedit.

It worked fine, apart from now all my programs have lost the .exe association and i can only open them by right click and run as administator

Not sure what you mean, i'm using Vista so do you mean programs and features in control panel, or set associations control panel found in start, all programs, default. :)
