Vista as "work in progress"

There, fixed that for you.

After all, if this wasn't the case, there would never be any progression in windows, Linux, OSX or any other software...

No. Microsoft make windows. And therefore they are just trying to increase their profits, because obviously all other OS releases are perfect each time, with each release building on perfection.

*wakes up*

So anyways, yeah... every OS (or indeed every piece of software, game, piece of hardware, car, TV, monitor, and so on) is a work in progress.

Photoshop will have better features next version, as will a new car made today have better features than a car made 20 years ago.

I do understand that the OP meant that Vista was more of a stepping stone OS, in that it may have a smaller life than others (with the next version of windows out soonish as rumors indicate) but then, seems that is the way of PC's in general :)

Theres a difference.

You can release a piece of software, then release some addons, and then release a new version which is better, thats acceptable.

What MS did was release Vista WAY before it was ready for release, and therefore the addons are patches to make it what it should have been.

The difference is releasign a piece of software and then improving it, and releasing something and then fixing it.

What parts of vista were not ready for release? Remember MS are not responsible for the third party drivers that provided most of the problems for Vista, nor the poorly coded third party applications that caused issues because they hadn't been written properly and Vista enforces the rules that have been about since NT that weren't being followed...

Just like Windows 2000 wasn't perfect and needed XP to round its rough edges off...

And then just like XP wasn't perfect and needed Vista fix its security flaws and its clunky/outdated GUI...

And then just like Vista isn't perfect and needs Windows 7 to round its rough edges off...

Pattern emerging here ? :D

Who says Vista was released well before its ready?

Its not Microsofts fault that Creative can't make a drive for an OS is it ?

There was (as stated in the security thread) a lot less security issues with Vista on release. And while some people had some problems, its mostly caused by drivers - which MS doesn't write.

The other thing is, while companies (and I mean for games, or any piece of software here) can Beta test to their hearts content, the problem is until it is given to the public at large, some bugs won't rear their head. Simply the numbers game. 1000 beta testers can't possibly have all of the hardware mixes, software install and whatever else in the real world.

I remember Smackdown on the Playstation, for like 4 or 5 versions it has had a bug (well several) which have been present in each and every damn version :/

*EDIT*

Oh yeah, and that doesn't mean I support companies who do poor testing, I just do understand how a few bugs get through.
