On XP, 99.9% of 'stuff' that was created went into My Documents. Backing up was mostly a matter of dragging the My Documents folder onto a drive and retrieving it upon re-installation of the OS.

With Vista however, there's the 'users' folder off the root directory of the boot drive, and within this, a folder name of the user and a whole host of directory for downloads, app settings, photos, music, etc, etc.

Does this work in the same principal as XP, i.e., would copying the entire "users" folder to a DVD say be a secure method of backing up the entire users documents, downloads, etc, etc?

yup

c:\users replaces c:\documents and settings

does this work..

%userprofile%

i'd imagine that now gets pointed at c:\users\username

Perfect! Cheers for that. Been holding a lot of my documents on a secondary drive but feel the time is right to move them (a copy of course! ;)) into the respective directories in Vista.

Thanks again.
