Out of interest, what are you Vista guys usnig to backup your stuff? I know Vista has build in backup stuff, but is it good enough?

ie: If your hard drive dies, and you want to put in a new drive and get back to your last backup, what are you using/doing?

Windows Home Server - automated & overnight for all the machines on the network.

Sounds expensive! Surely beyond the reach/needs of most people...

I'm just talking about people with a single Vista machine...

i'm using the windows xp backup tool. it's far better than the vista one as you have full control over what you want and don't want to backup. like the chap above i'm using an external drive.

i don't bother backing up windows itself though. i prefer a clean install every few months. well at least i did with xp. we'll have to see with vista. :)

I use Acronis to back up to an external drive. I also let Vista run its weekly backup.

Acronis is doing a full drive image? And it can successfully re-install that image to a new drive (such that Vista will run)?

my server in the garage (so even if the whole house burns down all our files will still be intact!) runs a set of weekly and daily backups for my machine (40gb), my parents (16gb) and my brother's machine (10gb) with two weeks retention.

At the moment i just have a 250gb in my main machine, that's going to become a 500gb drive soon and the 250 as a pagefile and os image backup. I'm using vista and i want to use the built in image backup tool but i can't find a way to schedule it?

I keep all my important stuff on a 2nd external drive. A reinstall is not so bad if needed and can prove a boost in performance, esp if you have been installing and uninstalling all the beta drivers etc.

Ahh so you don't have Home or Premium then?

No, I have Ultimate. ;)

Edit: I find using the Vista back Up and Restore uses a lot more space then what is actually on my drive..how come?

Reason I stopped using it is I like to still plug my External into another computer and find what I am looking for witht he Vista backup way you cant find anything! :(

You can certaily image an entire drive. Thankfully, I've never had to restore a whole image, but I'm pretty sure that's what it was invented for.

I'll swear on the Acronis web site they said they're not Vista compatible, until a new release?
