When I boot my computer up it all looks like its booting up ok. It gets past all the loading screens and gets past the log on screen but when it should load my desktop it just loads a black screen! The mouse cursor is there but it wont click, it just moves around.

This is my current spec--Gigabtye 965P-DS3, E4300, 2GB OcZ Memory, 8800GT. Res at the moment is 1680 x 1050 on Samsung 223BW

Has anybody else had that problem or know how to fix it?

Many thanks all

I had this on my rig a month or so ago. From googling I found that there are 2 varieties of this, the first where pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL will bring up Task Manager, this tends to be in the main some form of malware so get a copy of mawarebytes and do a scan. The other which is what I had is where the above does nothing but holding down the shift key will bring up a Sticky Keys help screen, from here you can go to the main help, do a search for taskman and then lauch taskman, from there you can do File -> New Task to run Explorer.exe but what I found is that I'd get 5-10 minutes of desktop and then the black screen would cut back in.

It was also a creeping death for me in that started with 1 account, then spread to another etc.... did all the virus and malware scans and found nothing so after wasting a day I ended up doing a complete re-install.

Looks like I will just re-install Vista then. Good job i have everything partitioned :)

I had just re-installed vista as I got the comp of a friend and when I got one of the automatic updates I had to restart it. Once re-started this happened :( Damn vista...

Thank you teaf!
