Hi all,

I'm about to send my Vista Ultimate CD back to MS encased in a bag of my own bodily filth. I've never used such an unstable and broken piece of software in my life.

The problem I am having at the moment is that Vista update will not install a single update because it hangs and provides an error code "80070643." According to Microsoft, this error code means that there is a problem with the Office Source Engine (ose.exe). There is an in depth knowledge base article on how to repair this problem. However, it sucks when it fails to take into account users who do not have Office installed (i.e., me and quite a few other people).

This is Microsofts only answer to this problem. I have e-mailed their tech support, who promise to respond within a working day with possible solutions. They do respond, but only with a bog standard e-mail to say phone their premium rate support line for more help! Great service!

With a little snooping around on the web, some of the many people with this problem worked out that it was to do with the system clock; if it's out of sync slightly, Vista update will die. Solution; sync the clock with the internet clock over at MS. This worked for a few folk... but not myself.

A few more people with the same problem found that a 3rd party firewall, and possibly the one that shipped with Vista is to blame. Solution; turn it off, or uninstall it. This worked for a few folk... but not myself.

Some other people recommended hiding the update in Vista update. This worked for some... but not me. I don't have the option to hide any updates. It's completely missing - like it never existed ("view available updates" is not listed).

After exhausting all online solutions over the past months, I've hit a brick wall. I'm totally at a loss as to how I can solve this problem. I have reinstalled/ formatted Vista several times, and tried to install updates manually just on the off-chance it will stop being such a useless bloated, slow piece of crap. It hasn't.

Does anyone here have any idea, or suggestions as to how I can get the updates? Microsoft do not want to help, so I'm hoping someone here has a better idea.

My computer hardware remains unchanged since I bought this PC, and it didn't have problems for the first 6 months of use with updates (it's a Dell laptop).

My next step is as I said in the first sentence, whilst switching back to a good MS OS (XP).

Well I've never had the problem (Using Windows Vista Ultimate X64).

Which version are you using?

Have you manually downloaded and updated to SP1?

M.

i remember i had a prob with my vista 64 it wouldn't install updates i had to set permisons on somthing i cant remember *** it was but i will have a look for you

Try installing a fresh copy of the OS onto your laptop, then download ( Manually ) and install service pack one. Then try update again and see how it goes?

Is this with a fresh install? Either way I would save the fussing and just reinstall now. Before you download the windows updates download updated drivers for all your hardware direct from their websites. Then get SP1, then get everything else.

i considered putting xp on a vista supplied laptop, only to be foiled because the drivers for the hardware were not availble for xp, sorry to hear of your problems with vista, ive had numerous issues with it

This is going to be a bit of a long shot solution but my mate who I built a PC for, with Vista, had very similar problems, it just wouldn't do all the windows updates and came up with a couple of codes similar to yours (it might even be the same one) We spent a whole day doing what was suggested on the microsoft site and what we had found searching in google, but to no avail.

To solve the problem, we tried to fix the vista installation by inserting the vista disc into his SATA DVD drive, but it wouldnt always read the disc properly, so we tried an IDE DVD drive, and installed it using that instead, and it worked first time

Did you install Vista using a SATA drive? if so that might be your problem. I know when I built his PC that SATA drive had problems reading the disc. I also had the same problem with mine at first (Wouldn't install using a SATA DVD drive, had to use a IDE one)

its a long shot but worth a go

I find it rather hilarious that people blame the OS, cuss it to high hell, and yet never even think that it might be their own setup or configuration that causes the problem.

Thousands and thousands of people use Vista, and love it. I use it, and it works perfectly, but then I know how to setup a PC :).

Oh there is one key sentence in your post. It's a Dell laptop. I'm guessing running the build of the OS that was on it when you took it out the box right? If so, there's your problem.

upgrade to xp - problem solved.

Some people would disagree that 'upgrading' to xp is actually an upgrade..

Dont understand the amount of problems some people have, seems to run flawlessly for me allthough I'd expect on most but the decent laptops it will run like crap.

Thanks for all the replies. I've already formatted and reinstalled several times to no avail. I'm running the x32 Ultimate if that helps.

I've tried manually installing updates but they all fail. After a lot of messing around, I figured it could be a hardware problem (it still could!), but I also have my doubts because there are still numerous folk with the exact same error code and problem out there. I'm re-downloading SP1 - does anyone have any tips on how to get it to run more smoothly (I'll turn off every non-essential service/ program I can think of)?

I'm happy for you and Memphis. Congratulations on having no problems, and thanks for your sterling and insightful input! I also know how to set up a PC thanks, but Vista still blows balls, even without the update problem. :)

To you maybe, I've set up 3 different pc's with Vista and not had a problem that wasn't because of my own stupidity.

Is there any way you can get to another pc, download Vista SP1 and all the updates?

Then slipstream them into your copy of Vista. Install with that new copy and it may solve your problems.

Cannot remember for the life in me what the software is called to make it easier. Someone on here will know. :)

I am using Vista Ultimate x86 and had a few teething problems but all is well now.
