Vista booting slow

Looking at a laptop for a friend which takes ages to start up. Everything is fine until the log in screen and i put the password in and it hangs on the welcome screen and sometimes doent do anything. i have ran virus scans and found a couple of threats and have removed them but still no difference. I have looked at windows start up programmes and theres just more or less the core programes that needs to start. Whenever it does start up everything is fine and works perfect.

Why is it taking so long to boot?

Ther might be some services and/or startup programs that have adhered to the boot process, might even be spyware.

I have now found that it only hangs on that screen whenever i do a restart, but whenever i shut down the laptop and turn it back on it is fine.

Any suggestion please??
