This is a friends laptop, that I'm trying to help her fix through Txt messages

It'll bootup, let her login then come up with a BSOD and reboots, with the same happening again etc.
Safe mode works fine.
I got her to make a new user account, and the same problem happens.

The BSOD says "A problem has been detected, and Windows will be shut down to prevent damage to your computer".
The stop code that comes up is "0x0000008E 0xC0000005, 0x81D570E6, 0x95174918, 0x00000000" I think (was hard getting that by sms!)

Am I right in thinking that's probably a virus/rootkit?
& what's the best way to remove it?

Thanks
Ed.

Some more fiddling around, and uninstalling NetMeter has appears to have temporarily cured it.

The thing is, NetMeter has been installed on it for a year (since it was brand new) so I'd guess that a more recent change/update/installation of something else has caused a conflict with it.....

The problem came back, so she uninstalled NetMeter again  But the problem is still there.

And now I've found out that she didn't actually uninstall NetMeter, she deleted it. & can't remember where she deleted it from :(

Looks like I'm gonna have to go round sometime and give it a good seeing to....
