Vista - 'Calculating time remaining'

I'm finding copying files between drives is horrifically slow with Vista, starting to think the issue is down to drivers (using a DFI Lanparty UT Expert - Nforce4 based, with two mirrored Raptors and a 200GB Sata drive) as seeing speeds of sub 5MB/s.

Downloading is also noticeably slower than XP in many cases (I downloaded the same file from the same site at the same time on my XP laptop and it was 10 times quicker than Vista).

Hopefully this will get sorted in the near future along with SLI compatible drivers as otherwise I will have to move back to XP.

I dont even use an sli motherboard and when using rc2 I also got very slow transfer rates of about 15mb/s across a gigabit network

On my laptop, when using Vista 64 it hangs when i try to copy or move anything from it to a network location or usb drive, saying 'Calculating time remaining', but i can copy stuff to it no problem.
When i switch over to Vista 32 i have no problem either way.

Is there a know virus or recent patch which could've caused this?
Saying that, I cant find any virus' on my may laptop and my desktop which is as up to date as the laptop is copying stuff fine

I needed to get about 20gb off it and it took about 8 hours

Oh and why the hell does Vista hang when i try to delete a shortcut on my desktop !? I right click it, then have to wait 5 minutes before i get the option to delete it :(

Installing SP1 beta helped my copy times a fair bit, as I too was suffering from reaaaaaaally long waits.

Definitely try the new SP and see if it helps!

Yep, file copying and network transfers have some major issues, SP1 will fix this, only a month to go now until it's released. I'm using XP at the moment although I have a copy of Vista that I could be using, my next reinstall will probably be in a couple of months so I'll have to decide if I want to go with Vista SP1 or XP SP3. I needed VIVO support on my 7800 GT so Vista has always been out of the question but I have moved that to an older XP machine now and installed an 8800 GTS so that isn't holding me back now.

This has been cleared up (for me at least) with the Vista Service Pack RC1. Speeds fly now for transfers :) Great o/s would never go back to XP.

Exactly the same for me, much better now, can't wait for the proper version. Between drives is much faster for me although network still max's out at 10 instead of 100 like its supposed to

I'm running RC1 update and still have this problem when copying files across the network although not as bad as it used to be. So or example if I copy around 300mb it'll take ages for the copy to start, then say it's going to take 2hour+ but then it'll quickly comes down to a few minutes. more annoying then anything else.

Yeah, it will help.

I was speaking to someone at Microsoft in mid December and he said how the copying time remaining thing is fixed in SP1. :)

Is there a fix for RPC performance in Vista yet (specifically RPC over HTTP for remote Exchange access, it's unbearably slow at the moment).

Well if the RC for SP1 is anything to go by and unless the final SP1 is going to be different then I still suffer from the problem to some extent.
