Firstly this doesn't happen with XP. I though it could be a hard drive head parking feature of Vista.

Have not looked at disabling services yet, and other stuff. Just worried this will reduce the life span of my hard drive.

The hard drive clicks followed by, what I can best describe as, a whistle. This occurs three times before the machine completes option I selected (shutdown or restart).

Anyone else experienced this quirk?

Shuttle SN27P2 with nVidia nForce 570 SLI/570/550 AMD - Windows Vista 64-Bit driver with all components installed.
Samsung SP2504C S-ATA hard drive with acoustics set to quiet mode. Single drive.

Edit: Found someone else suffering from it on a different forum here

The chipset is an nForce 5 570 Ultra. Thought it was a lower version of the 570 line myself, but according to Shuttle's site it's Ultra.

Device Manager Storage controllers section includes "Microsoft iSCSI Initiator" entry. The Disk drives sections lists the Samsung drive as a SCSI disk device. Looks like nVidia has taken driver creation short cut, as I remember the SCSI naming was present in a early nForce 2 motherboard driver.

Will try installing the driver pack again some time in the future, excluding the storage controller.

Still does the three clicks without the nVidia nForce drivers. I also remember Vista identified the hard disk prior to installation of any drivers as a SCSI device.
