Hi all,

Installed Vista Home Premium a while back with my system - its an OEM license - 32-Bit - just browsing round other day and i got a message saying "you have 3 days to activate windows" ?????

Is this a known issue, also when i try to reactivate via the internet, i am told that the license is already in use

Hey up,

All you will have to do is call the free-phone uk number and enter the numbers it asks for.

Very simple, doesnt very long, and its free

Yeah, i just done that now :)

Just concerning that i will have to do that every time i reinstall windows

Its a perfectly legitimate copy of Vista too.

I'm gonna have to do that again if i change my cpu later this year too aren't i?

Yes you will have to do it every time you re-install, and yes you will have to do it when you change CPU. It's hardly a big deal.

When I first installed vista 32 bit home premium mine would de-activate itself regularly , I thought it was because my system was overclocked but then for some reason it has stopped doing it so I guessed it was a bug ! Even though its the retail version I still have to phone Microsoft for a telephone activation number and the last few times I have called them I get " What have you done this time" which is annoying considering I paid £200 for it :(
Usual reason for mine needing to be reactivated these days is a motherboard change

Sorry but changing the CPU will not de-activate any copy of Microsoft Windows. Nor will it require any drivers. ;)

I have Vista Ultimate Retail & get this as well.
But i found if i left it to active its self after 3 days, the already in use would not occur.

Use the automated feature & you don't have to speak to person.

i had to do it when i changed my gpu
i think the oem version allows only a limited amount of hardware changes before it requires reactivation iirc

It is locked with your motherboard. Changing the GPU shouldn't have provoked a re-activation request. However, sometimes it just does for some reason.

I've got an OEM of Vista Ultimate x64, I did a re-install yesterday and installed some chipset drivers. That's a no-no I'm afraid :(, changed my hardware ID's so I'm told and prompted a re-activation.

from what i remember someone saying, it was a new system in Vista that its locks to your motherboard, however minor parts like RAM are given a value (for example 1) , if you change your RAM a given number of times (for arguments sake, 10) then you will have to re-activate. say a CPU is 2 etc.

i remember lots of people saying it, but it does sound strange to me.

*sits and waits patiently for Firewizard*
