I keep getting a lot of windows explorer errors meaning that explorer has to restart itself. I have checked for spyware and viruses and none were detected. The really odd thing is that when I click on start/windows icon I have absolutely no programs listed there and have to click on All Programs to see anything??

To fix this issue I have to start task manager end the explorer.exe process and then start it again. explorer.exe is using 50% cpu all of the time, does anybody know how to fix this issue, its driving me mad.

IE 7 has lots of add ons which are could be the cause...

Try this.... Tools>Manage Add Ons>Enable or Disable Add Ons
At the top you have a drop down which shows you what add ons are currently running.
You will be amazed at how much junk there is. I would start by disabling any add ons that you think you wont use. You can easily turn them back on so dont worry about try some bits out. Once you have disabled some, close and restart IE7.
See how you get on.
At worst, disable them all and enable them one by one until you find which one is causing the problem. You also might want to bare in mind that you will have to do this for each user on the PC.

I have been looking into why Internet Explorer is noticeable slower than IE6 and have found a number of articles on it. Given that there are already a number of things you can run to speed up IE7 and that Microsoft have provided us with the ability to remove IE7. I think they may be away that there is underlying problems.

Start Internet Explorer without the Add Ons
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

Change the Number of connection that Internet Explorer attempts
Copy and paste the following text into notepad and save it as a .reg file. Then execute the file.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
“MaxConnectionsPerServer”=dword:00000010
“MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server”=dword:0000010

Disable the following features in I.E7 (perform on each user logon)
Disable Phishing Filter – Tools>Phishing Filter Turn Off
Disable IE 7 Feeds if you don’t use Tools->Internet Options->Content->Feeds->Settings
Disabling the “Clear Type HTML *” (options > advanced > multimedia)
Disabling the SSVHelper Class plugin from JAVA - Tools->Manage Add-ons->Enable or Disable Add-ons

Hope they help if you try them...

My problem is with Windows Explorer, not internet Explorer.

I have a simular problem, before i installed 64Bit and was on 32Bit i could click windows messenger and it would automatically restart explorer.exe. now i cant do that, if i end explorer.exe myself then i just get the background and i have to log off and back on.

Still loads of bugs with Vista, the most annoying one is when the screen goes all black and flickers.. wont let you access any folders because it makes the screen go haywire and have to log off and on again to fix it..

I haven't had any of these problems and I'm running Vista business at work at Ultimate 64bit at home.

If you need to end your explorer.exe you can restart it by pressing ctrl+alt+del bring up your taskmanager and then click File "New Task (Run...)" and type explorer.exe in the run box.

This will start a new explorer and let you work on your computer as normal.

I know how to restart explorer.exe in task manager but to be honest its just a little bit annoying. I really think that it should just work.
