Is there anyway to stop this? It's quite worrying hearing my external HDD clonk and go in to some sort of hibernation mode if not accessed for a while.

It's Lacie 250gb firewire if that helps.

Any ideas?

Funny its obviously a feature, as my backup drive has been doing this, leaving me worrying every time it was crashing!

I went into power options and played about in there. Switch the PC to max performance which should then disable it from doing this.

had the same issue with Vista shutting down my internal hard drive 1 hour into watching streamed DivX files on my wireless media player. Easy enough to disable in power settings but seemed odd to me as I presumed that Vista would know that something was using the hard drive.

Vista also shutsdown hardrives when doing a reset which then takes 3 times as long to post as my 3 HD`s spin up one by one.

Thank you. I've adjusted the advanced settings and will see how it goes.

In the advanced power management area you can play about with powering off USB attached devices - i think it even gives you the option to be selective as to which you want to power down?
