I am trying to get vista to share files the way i want with no success.

the problem seams to be i want to share a hard disc, I have a raid0 for windows i don't want to share, and a 500GB "storage" drive I do want to share.

I want users over my network to enter there vista user name and password in order to view, edit, mod files. this will allow me to set permissions for each user properly. so i can restrict access both locally and remotely.

I have password protected sharing on. but other PC are unable to assess the drive unless in security it set "everybody" as allowed etc, at which point they can get onto the drive with out entering a password.

i have tried a work around where i tern password sharing off and try to assign permissions to everything, but this just block everybody (i.e. no option to enter a password), so vista doesn't know who tray are so blocks

any ideas, this is getting relay frustrating

yup. for the level of control you want, you need to create accounts on your vista box that will match the users connecting.

I have bean doing a bit of reading around and it looks like if you have XP if the accounts don't match up it will prompt you for a log in. does this stand with vista??

this has worked like a charm, i had to install Link Layer Topology Discovery on the XP box but after that it works like i want.

i.e. if the you logged into you XP laptop and the user names and passwords match it lets you straight though, if they don't it asks you for a user name and password.

also means i can set all the permissions on the folders on the drives to stop users from assessing the one I don't want them to, and there is no way to access form the vista PC or there XP ones.
