Hi there,

I would like to setup my Media Center shared folders so that my computer can write to it, but other computers on the network can only read from it.

How do i go about doing this?

Thanks.

I haven't got Vista but I would imagine (I would hope) that it's similar to XP.

Right click on the shared folder and find an option to say "Allow other network users to change my files" and uncheck it or whatever.

Hope this helps.

Hello Conrad11, if you first open the "Network and Sharing Center" window up and make sure that the "File Sharing" option is On. Now go to the directory where the folder is that you would like to share. Now right click on the appropriate folder and go to "Properties". Once the "Properties" window has appeared, select the "Sharing" tab and under "Network File and Folder Sharing", click on "Share". The "File Sharing" window should now appear. Click on the little drop down arrow (Next to the "Add" button), select your account and then click on the "Add" button. It will now of added the appropriate user to the share list. Select your account and where it saids "Permission Level", change it from "Reader" to "Co-owner". You will now be able to "Read", "Write" and if necessary "Delete" from that particular folder.

Now the user's that you wish to restrict them from doing anything other than being able to access and read from a particular folder. Click on the little drop down arrow again and then add the user's that you wish. Once they are added, this time under "Permission Level", make sure that it is set as "Reader". :)

Ok - fine i understand that.

So now i have set the permissions - how would i access the folder via a certain account on this pc?

Because when i go to my network places and navigate to the folder, it automatically assumes i am a guest and gives me read-only access.

Hey Conrad11, if you open up the "Network and Sharing Center" window and at the bottom of that screen it should say "Show me all the shared network folders on this computer". If you click on their, it should bring up all of the sharded folders of that system. :)

I don't think i have explained myself properly.

I have a Media Center [Computer A] which has the shared folders on.

I am on my computer [Computer B] which i want to be able to read and write to the media center [Computer A]

The rest of the computers on the network should have readonly access to the media center [Computer A]

Right, I think you would need a server edition of windows to set-up network file permissions unless Fire Wizard or anyone has any ideas!
