Ok first to say I am more then happy with every aspect of vista cept one.

Whenever I transfer any files, from drag and drop, ftp, networking, or anything, TO my vista machines hds, when each file gets to like 99% or the last few seconds it freezes for ages, longer then it takes to transfer the file. It even happens when copying from one hd to another. Is there soemthing obvious I am missing here or will I just have to put my harddisks in another computer?

It's Vista m8, not your drives. Try Google with "Slow Vista File Transfers"
There is a Microsoft hotfix out, Also a few tips to help speed things up a bit. I have just tried this one and will see how it goes :)

Good information taken from a post on slashdot by Barny (when they posted this article yesterday morning):

"For those unwilling to read the forums (or who block all MS sites at their router), the problem relates to Vista making thumbnails of files, and trying to continue making them even when you have told it to delete a file, its not a transfer speed problem, and can be VERY easily stop gapped by disabling thumbnail views in the folder view settings :)"

Fine here

I've found the file copying to be substantially quicker than XP. Most likely because it uses 1MB chunks now instead of 64KB chunks like XP did.

BTW: Don't look at the "MB/sec" figure on Vista and think "Hmm that's lower than HDtach..." because things just don't work like that. If XP displayed a throughput figure as well it would be very similar. The average file copy will be about 25-35MB/sec.

how about copying across the network?

if i browse to an XP machine and copy to the Vista box i get about 15MB/sec ...if i initiate the transfer FROM the XP box i get the usual 30-40MB/sec.

i'm not alone with this problem from what i see.

its not even so much the speeds. I try ftping from an xp machine to my vista machine and it runs fine (10mbytes/sec LAN) but freezes at the end of each file for ages

I don't have a Gigabit LAN but I'm definately getting 100Mbit on Vista.

So using the figure from the transfer window, it should be around 25 - 35MB/s? Mine starts out at 10 or so then goes up to 20 over an 800mb transfer.
