Hey all,

I'm used to using Kerio in XP, now using Vista Firewall and I was wondering if there is any way to make it so that it asks before allowing any application to access the net as Kerio did, giving you the option of course to always allow if necessary.

I have installed a number of apps lately which have just worked without any prompt to be allowed or not.

Thanks

my experiance so far is this with windows firewall, when i install a application or a game that requires acses to the internet, a box does pop up asking you if you if you wish to keep blocking or unblaock the game/app in question, i have clciked on the unblock, and it has never asked again, so i dont know what you have done differently, i will say this though if your playing a game, you obviously cannot see the box pop up as its underneath the game, if you know your using a game/app that needs internet axe, you could do whati do, the same you do in xp realy, press the alt and tab key this will minimise all screens, then you should then see the firewall box, then click on unbock,it might cuase soem problems in the game/app as not all like loosing the focus, but a quick restart of the app/game wil sort this.
hope it helps

For example I just installed Spybot S&D and had no prompt to allow it to connect to check for updates. I just clicked check and away it went.

you need to go to the security centre, perhaps you have set it not to ask and ahthorise automaticly, saying that some programs, have an option to authorise windows firewall automaticly on the install of the new apps ect

open the admin tools folder and run the advanced firewall configuration thingy. maybe you can change the default behaviour so it prompts you for all outgoing connections? i'm not sure since i don't have it installed but i do know you can block applications manually from back when i used to run vista rc2. :)

Well I think I found the right options but for Incoming and Outgoing there are only options for Block or Allow...no Ask :)

Its the same for me, it often doesnt ask if I want to allow a program to access the internet, but just allows it automatically, even though I have never previously told it to allow that program. Maybe it has some pre-loaded programs that it automatically allows that are sure to be safe?

It seems to work by pre-defined rules and whether they match a rule or not decides if it gets allowed or not.
