Vista - First Impressions

@The more knowledgeable vista users, would disabling Superfetch improve performance for me? I only use Windows for photoshop & steam.

The only irritation I have with Vista is its hard disk thrashing.

Oh theres one more, WinRAR won't integrate itself into the right click menu, but I think thats down to the version I have not being signed.

Considering superfetch has a background priority, pre-loads application data, and releases ram when needed, I can't see how it'd have any positive performance impact if disabled.

Regarding winrar - use 7zip :p

I'm just about to set up my first rig with vista 64. The only reason I haven't done so previous, is laziness. :p I have all my shiny new components sitting here at the side of me waiting to be attacked, I'm off to work at 10.00 p.m, I might just have it finished by then. I'm hoping for a problem free install first time, fingers crossed. :)

Winrar work fine here in right click contextual menu.

Vista is fine, would not got to back to XP on my main machine or my second one. My third and forth do have xp, as does my laptop but only due to them being quite old and low spec.

That was my issue with vista, I disabled everything I could and still got the dreaded hard drive thrashing.

That and not being able to use ati tray tools, may sound silly but just those two things alone will make me not use it.

Cant for the life of me get my 4850 running with vsync on without using ati tray tools.

And i am not running d3d overrider constantly in the background to achieve that.

ANyway I have found xp pro 32bit just as snappy as vista with 4gb ram even if it does only see 3.25.

I did a fresh install of XP last night and it's like going back to 98 when I was using XP :D

I'm sure it's just the transition I'm uncomfortable with - i.e. not knowing exactly where to find things, not being familiar with what the OS is doing.

When I've excorcised my need to benchmark my new rig, I'll go to Vista and settle in with it - take some time to become familiar with it and try and iron out my niggles - e.g. ATI Tray Tools, UAC etc.

Hang on a sec is ati tray tools now working on vista 64 without the need to change stuff upon boot ?

1) It's BIG. I use Norton Ghost to backup an image of the fresh install so I can get a clean install in just a couple of minutes. Fresh install is ~15GB (Ultimate) (probably including swap file). I have trimmed off some fat using vLite (namely things like the 1GB of languages and some other features I'll not use). This has left me with a ~ 7GB Install, which is a little more manageable.

Interesting. I installed Vista Ultimate to a 10GB partition and the sector-by-sector backup image is 2.9GB

Fresh, untouched install from the DVD. ( no vLite, tweaking )

Still an XP luddite.Saying that,I'm still on a skt 939 single core!
But,when I finally upgrade,I am starting to come over to the idea of using Vista. Its just the idea of having to re learn everything that puts people off I think.

I use Vista's built in backup utility which I see as quite useful, it updates your existing system backup and you can restore it easily too.

Vista64 is very nice and very fast :)

I've had vista 64 installed for a couple of days now and I really like it. Coming from XP Home edition has been a breeze. The actual install was a piece of cake and so far I've had zero problems with drivers. I do how ever have one slightly annoying problem. I don't know why but my fonts look a little washed out and not as sharp as XP Home. Some of the graphics on the desktop seem to have a jagged edge around them? I can live with it, but I'm curious if any thing can be done.

My google powers aren't that strong and all I could come up with is cleartype, which I have tried. I also downloaded x86 drivers for my monitor but this hasn't made much difference.

I first run it on a P4 2.4Ghz with 512MB RAM. I've since used it on a AthlonXP 2000+ which doesn't even have SSE2. Both times it was perfectly usable for word processing and web stuff.

There's very little to relearn for the average user, I really don't understand people's frustrations with Vista.
