So a friend has just messaged me, his parents have forgotten their password to their PC.

Having a look around it seems the only way in is through 3rd party software, is this the ONLY way? I can see this ending up in my room on Sunday :(

Any hints/tips would be great.

Guess you could technically (not actually sure) take it out of their pc, plug it into yours, copy all the data off, and then reinstall windows... but then you'd have to rebuild programs etc... sounds like much more hassle...

I used Ophcrack on my mates comp a while ago, when one of his kids had changed it for a joke then forgot what the new password was. Worked a treat.

Afaik, they removed the old way of starting in safemode and logging into the admin account to reset the password when they brought out Vista.

Also recommend Ophcrack, i used it on my parents pc last week, it only took 20 mins.

edit. can you create another account with admin privileges, and then remove the other password
