Vista freezing + Blue Screen

Hi guys, basically my friend has an old second hand laptop (1.66ghz, 1gb ram 160gb hdd) which is running vista. It was running slow and freezing every time she used it so i updated it, this seemed to fix the problem, now more update s have been done including SP1 the laptop is freezing and also Blue screening.. I've tried updating it more but it just does one of the aforementioned things..

The only thing i can think of doing is installing SP2 to see if that resolves it, cant system restore to before sp1 update :/...

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

I would wipe it and install Windows 7. I had similar problems with machines running Vista and trying to install service packs so I gave up and wiped them clean and put W7 in and not had a problem since.
