Vista graphical problems - solution yet?

I know many games have trouble running in Vista like for example most recently Defcon. Its because one of the graphics modes havent been sorted properly yet. Opengl? Cant remember. But I was wondering if there is a solution or a patch or something that fixes this? And yes I have tried latest vista graphics drivers.

yup no joy. compatability doesnt sort graphical problems as far as I know. Its more for driver lookup methods and data handling differences. I think.

Most of the game problems are down to bad graphics drivers now. I can't say about ATi, but Nvidia's drivers are still pretty shoddy, though I believe you can use XP's drivers and games will run ok, but you will lose the Aero interface.

OpenGL is currently not supported by ATi's drivers (not sure about nVidia). Not sure if this is an oversight due to time constraints or that MS wants everything to be directX so OpenGL (along with EAX) is not supported...

I wouldn't expect a solution until launch day or even sometime after. These problems always happen with every major Windows release - it's just a case of waiting unfortunately.

PS: I'm quite amazed by the number of people on here who are clearly non-techies that have MSDN subscriptions

I hope they arent waiting till release to get some suport out. that would really suck

Why, exactly? Anyone using a new release of Windows, even if they think they're doing it legally, months before its consumer release really shouldn't be expecting games to be properly supported yet.

Good Lord! That would wipe quite a few games off the compatible list - all Quake engine games to start with.

Why was the Vista thread deleted for Piracy? We have it on MSDN!!

Please email me with proof that you own a legit copy then.

If people are talking about Vista just for gaming then it is highly unlikely they have a MSDN sub, afterall why use Vista for gaming when XP will game considerably better?

Anyone with a MSDN subscription will be a techie and thus won't be posting "why don't my games work" on public forums. MSDN subscribers have private Microsoft forums they can post on.

Well I'm a Microsoft MVP, have a windows news site and a MSDN account, I still reply to posts asking questions about gaming in Vista and even in the beta newsgroups people still ask why there is no EAX in vista...just because you are "tech" minded doesn't mean you know all the answers which is why people post questions.

Sent the proof too.

I don't disagree with that, but I'm a techie and I talk about games and respond about ones that don't work. The public Vista forums are also open, just send everyone there instead.

didn't some people who beta tested and reported lots of bugs and gave MS valuable information get given Vista Ultimate for free? I also have a friend who got Vista through uni somehow, he's an informatics student, I really wouldn't call him a techie though!

Yep anyone who reported one bug got it free...wouldn't call most of the testers I see in the beta group as techie either.

I have a Technet pro subscription through my work and we have a VL agreement so we get new software as it comes out. Im using Vista at home to test - that includes playing with games but mainly drivers.

when i had vista rc2 installed with my old x800pro @ xt (now sadly departed), all of my games ran just as well as they did on xp. i guess i just got lucky with the drivers. :)

Who says XP games considerably better? From what I've seen of Vista so far, 90% of games run just as well, 5% actually run better and 5% have a few issues to be resolved. Why shouldn't techie people like gaming? Some pretty broad sweeping (and incorrect) statements there chap......
