Hi

I have just installed Vista on my main Pc and for the life of me i cant get my Graphics card or the hd audio on the card to run , see below

pcproblem.jpg

I also had the same problems with the onboard lan , but i just put an old lan card in and its fine, i did try swaping the gfx card with my old x850 xtpe and had the same trouble

I had no problems with xp

The pc is

Athlon 3700
2 gig ddr 400
Sapphire A9RD480Adv mobo
Sapphire 3850 pcie
700 watt winpower psu

Any idea's guys ?

Ok 'DAD' did you happen to install your motherboard drivers as soon as you installed Vista, the drivers CD that comes with a motherboard usually has the chipset, LAN and audio drivers on it..?
Not doing that would account for all of your problems.

EDIT: From the screen grab that you posted I have noted that you are showing TWO LAN adaptors in your system. Whilst that is not necessarily a bad thing it could cause some conflicts if you didn't disable your Realtek one within your BIOS before putting the LAN card in the system.

Then again if your probem is not using the appropriate drivers your Realtik LAN could work fine once those are applied.

Hi Vimes
Thanks for the reply :)

Yes i installed all the drivers off the CD and even downloaded the latest drivers, the ATI drivers go in no problem at all,it find's all the hardware etc , i reboot and still get the code 12 error (not enough free resources). The reason i put in the second lan card is i have the same error on the onboard lan as i do with the graphics card .

My onboard sound is ok no problems with that at all, but the the 3850 has HD audio as well but again it seems i dont have enough free resources.

They all workrd fine in xp, maybe its time for an upgrade ?

mmm I do remember a long time ago <holds arms out wide to add emphasis> that when something like that happened to me it was a matter of increasing the AGP apeture size within the BIOS, but that was, obviously, on a different architecture and card.

Not sure if the above helps or even applies to you.

I notice from the above screenshot that you are reading from the Sapphire support forums, they might be of help..?

Out of curiosity could you post a screengrab showing the device Manager BUT change the view to show the resource by type, then drop down the Memory tree to show the memory allocation for each device.

If you do I imagine it will show memory addresses that the graphics card is trying to use but can't.....

Such as ...

E0000000-EFFFFFFF not available.
FDCF0000-FDCFFFFF not available.

I am a bit lost now with this problem , never had anything like it in the past .

thanks for looking at it ,i appreciate your help m8

I am not sure if I can offer you any more help than I have written above.

I know, for instance, that there is a problem with N-Force 3 chipset motherboards / Vista / Dual core CPU's running in combo. The problem is one of memory allocation routines when coupled with an ATI card and it seems that you have only ATI cards (your X850 did the same so the HD part of the graphics card could be ignored as being part of the problem) to try your rig with...?

As you can't manually override the memory allocations I am a little stumped, as yet, to think of anything apart from the obvious driver / updated BIOS / try another brand of graphics card (will not help your LAN) suggestions.

Sometimes Vista is not just going to happen in all cases, I just hope that yours isn't one of them...!

Just a quick update

I borrowed my sons 8500gt to see if i had the same problem and yup it does the same thing.

So i guess my motherboard aint up to the job of running vista :(

Upgrade time i think then, dam its turning out a bit more expensive than i first thought,New MB, ram , and cpu , oh well its about time i did .

Now then what bundle to get ?

Did you install Windows XP drivers or were they Vista compatible ones? I know, silly question but just want to make sure. :)

Hi m8 , not silly at all ,but they were all vista drivers , they even say they have installed correctly and need to reboot but still wont work. And as i use my 37" tv as a monitor the 800 X 600 res make for a "my first computer" look to vista :)

I wonder if Sp1 will help ?

I doubt Service Pack one would help. Have you gotten the Vista drivers for your motherboard off their website?

Sadly no m8 the sapphire suport is ,well not the best, the only vista drivers on there are for the OB sound, but as its a ati chipset they install of the catalyst drivers.

I see where your problem lies and that is quite plain to anyone. You have an Nforce Motherboard resource error which is a conflict between memory available to 32bit addressing which is easily fixed by a Hotfix downloaded from Microsoft. KB929777 which you need to download and save in a safe place. Execute it and reboot. This solves a 4GB memory error common to Nforce and IP35 motherboards.
It allows the timing error of the FSB and the Southbridge to marry up and coordinate correctly. You are one of the lucky ones you actually made it into windows. Otherwise you would have been greeted by either a BSOD error code 0x0000007E or 0x0000000A which are IRQ conflict errors. What your motherboard has done is allow you in in standard VGA mode. There are some additional fixes for the MB to be downloaded but unless you have any more IRQ conflicts or Motherboard resource conflicts you don't need them. I hope the above solves your problem even though I usually end up sorting out 680i Nforce 6 and 7 problems.
P.S. You will still only have 3.25GB available in system properties. This is a bug in windows 32 bit addressing and not your memory. Vista Diagnostics will let you know if there is a problem with your Hardware because it does system checks whilst booting.

I am impressed, it certainly was not obvious to me :)

I hope that it does work for the OP - even if he does only have 2GB of memory installed :)

I popped over to their website and to suggest that it was a little bare of Vista drivers would be an exaggeration, to say the least...!!!

I hope that the suggestion by jeffa123 can help you, keep us posted.

It might sound silly this but if you had the opportunity to restore an XP working image to the drive and then did an upgrade to Vista, rather than a fresh install, I wonder what your end result would be...?

Not ideal I know but sometimes desperate times........

EDIT - BTW I assume you are trying to install the 32bit version of Vista..?
