Vista hanging on installation

God this is annoying, happens everytime but sometimes it will eventually work.

Basically after the first part of the setup when it expands the files then reboots and is on the last quarter "Completing installation" my PC will either hang for an hour or so on that screen and then produce an error message saying that the installation could not complete OR i'll just BSOD.

Anyone got any ideas. :(

Tried formatting, resetting BIOs etc etc!

Been trying for hours, at this rate I'm putting XP on. :o

How much RAM is in the PC. I know pre SP1 Vista did not like installing on 4GB

4Gb, it's an integrated SP1 disc though.

Just enabled AHCI SATA BIOS or something now as this apparently can fix this issue, if this doesn't work though I'm just going to XP, this is ridiculous.

Found loads of people through Google having the same issue but no definitive solution. :o

When i first intalled Vista i had to do it with only 1 stick of ram in as it would just restart randomly whenever it felt like it. Had to do this with Vista 32, 64 and 64 + SP1

try removing ram sticks
or even upping ram voltage, what ram / board is it

Gigabyte 965P-S3 (DS3 without solid caps or something)

I'll try upping the ram voltage, I've just had it on the "Completing installation" for another half hour, tried adding SATA drivers manually but didn't help, this is the last time I'm gonna try now.

(been trying to install since 7am)

My board is a Gigabyte DS3 (P35 chipset) and the DAM default voltage is 1.8 Try upping it to 2.1

try with just 2gb in, what ram is it?

Some Corsair PC-5300 (DDR2) might try that after this, bit of hassle though. :o

Yep I usually run at 2.1 when OC'd but I went back to stock purely to try and fix this so on second thought putting it back up isn't gonna do much. :p

You could also try installing with the bare components installed, eg no USB drives or devices connected if possible. I found my USB drive was causing a slow install for me.

Tried the ram voltage, no difference at all. :(

Will take a few things out, though there's nothing inside to take out really aside from ram and my sound card, but it has installed before with the same ram in so I don't see how that could be the issue.

Gonna take a few USB devices out and if that doesn't do it then goodbye to Vista for a while.

What have you changed since then? There must be something that's different, or borked.

I had a similar issue when first trying to install Vista and it turned out that my OC wasn't as stable as I thought. After running memtest a few times I found that my RAM was very fussy about the voltage even at stock voltages.

I'm not saying that's your issue but just something to think about.

I've changed nothing. :(

Anyway back on XP now, my FPS has gone up by roughly 120 on World of Warcraft, LOL. :D

Max FPS I got on Vista was about 120, now it's up to 290 at times, hmm...
