Vista = HD LCD?

I have been wondering for a while whether Windows Vista will require a special monitor i.e HDTV to run all the sparkly goodness? :D

I know that it will work with any monitor, but if you want to watch Hi Definition content will current LCD's be able to display it properly?

I have heard that most monitors could support 720p but not 1080i/p as you would need 1980x1080? Is this true?

In short I was all ready to splash out for the NEC LCD20WGX2 widescreen behemoth, but thought if my first LCD at this price will become defunkt in a few months, is it better to wait?

If you want to watch HDCP HD-DVD's or Blu-Ray discs, then you will need both a graphics card and monitor with HDCP on - currently no such solution exists. However, you will be able to watch any non-HDCP hi-def content fine.

As for 1080 stuff, your monitor would be able to display it, downscaled. To display 1080 at native, you will need a 24" widescreen monitor.
 
So would you recommend the NEC? I know from seeing it and the forum that it is a great choice, but I want this to last a good 5-6 years or so as it is by no means cheap!

Anyway im sure that this link many before it will be cracked before it hits the shelves.

If you are not bothered about HDCP, then yes, the NEC is an excellent screen that should last you as long as you want.

If HDCP viewing concerns you, you have no choice but to wait. Personally, I am not worrying about HDCP at all. The whole system stinks of greed, treating paying consumers as though they were pirates to begin with - and this coming from an industry that is awash with our money already. Copy protection should be reactive not proactive in my mind, and it certainly shouldn't require you to go out and buy new hardware when the hardware you have is perfectly capable.

I agree, and when its cracked, im sure the NEC will do a standup job of downscaling it, or i could just use it as an excuse for a new TV.....

I think the demand for cracking HD will be pretty high, its long awaited and many people will be more up for cracking it than buying a whole new PC.

I didnt really know much about DVD-A until a quick google, but that seems pretty niche compared to the next gen format?

You could google and be hit in the face by a load of technical jargon but it basically comes down to this.

It's a hardware anti-copy protection for HD video to protect the movie industry etc. while at the same time extracting even more money from the public.

Surprisingly the big Corporations are very much behind it. ;)
 
There are quite a few panels about that are HDCP compliant.
However there are no gfx cards that are HDCP compliant at the moment.
Not until the DX10 cards come out will we see HDCP compliancy.

... and a big price tag! To run most things on that with eye candy, you need to have a brand new gfx. Which would be fine if the DX10 HDCP cards were ready, but its a big leap financially for most people.
