I have done a lot of googling, and it seems to be a common problem. But i cant seem to solve it. All the files on my raid array were created on XP. As such they are all set to read only. I cant remove this read only setting, because as soon as u do, it just turns itself back on. So i set ownership of the whole drive to my account on vista, and i set permissions to full control. I have also tried this on individual folders... However, i still cant remove the read only.

Others must have had this problem. Can anyone shed some light on what im doing wrong?

EDIT: ok even though when i right click the folder it appears read only, the files within it are not read only. The problem is that the permissions are not being applied to subdirectories and files within the subdirectories. My account which i added for the top directory with full control, no longer appears 1 directory below this. As such several directories down the line where all my files are only seem to have read and execute permissions for \Users on the machine. Does anyone know how to apply the permissions i set at the top of the directory to all files and folders below?

ok nm, i fixed it. In case anyone else ever has a problem this is what you do:

right click the drive > click properties > security tab > click advanced > owner tab > click edit (bottom left) > change ownership to your vista account by clicking it in the "change owner to:" box > select "replace owner on subcontainers and objects" to apply ownership to all files and folders on the drive > click ok > click ok > click ok.

Then right click the drive again and open security tab > click "edit" to change permissions > add your vista user account if it is not already there by clicking add and then typing your username into the box that says "enter the object names to select (examples):" > click ok > select your account under "group or user names:" > click full control check box at the bottom > click ok > click ok.

I hope theres nothing wrong with that approach. It works anyway. Why that has to be so difficult i do not know.
