OS: Vista Ultimate x64
Hardware: Asus A8N-SLi Premium nForce4 (rest not so important)
Router: Cisco 837, 12.3T IOS
A few problems:
1) NICs
With my motherboard I have got two NICs built into it. Now one the NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller, and the other: Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller. Now I only use one of these at a time.
If I use the Mavell one plugged in at boot it gets a 169.254.x.x address, I then do a release and renew, it picks up a 192.168.1.x address, as well as all the other info. However it doesn't have the ability to ping the gateway.
If I plug it into the nForce one (at boot), it says: "Media disconnected"... occasionally. This is when it is plugged in and the lights are happily flashing away. I have to reboot to fix it.
2) Network speeds
Now with Firefox, IE, iTunes I get 160KBps downloads, which is ideal. However using programmes like wget, XFire, FahMon (download new projects), and other smaller programmes I am only getting 2KBps max. Tried dropping the firewall, didn't help.
3) Folding@Home
Can receive WU's but not send. This one just isn't limited to my computer, other computers running XP have the same issue, but only recently. Tried dropping all firewalls and access-lists, still doesn't work. Have to go to school and upload them there.
4) USB
This cheap USB stick I have (ironically with Microsoft written all over it) doesn't seem to want to connect. It comes up as a drive letter, but when you go to open it, it prompts you to "please insert a disc into drive g:". Also I don't this the USB support is all there. I've got devices unknown in the device manager. Although I have been using another stick with ReadyBoost perfectly.
5) SSH + Cygwin
I am sure that this is a Vista problem because I set this up on XP without difficulties. I cannot login. It keeps rejecting my password. Now I have changed the password a few times just to make sure I wasn't doing something stupid.
6) iTunes
Crashes now and then, but I have learnt to just accept that with Apple products.
I am sure there is more... Clearly not as important as the ones above.
Thanks for the help!
NOTE: Also I am still a fan of Vista despite my issues and previous judgements that I made before I installed it.
