Vista 'Hibernate' function

Just thought I would give a mention to possibly one of my favorite parts of Vista - it's great to be able to quickly hit the button, turn of the screen, then resume work a few hours later.

Anyone else use it? Works really well, and fast too, on my system. I don't know if it helps much regarding power usage etc though.

Just tried hibernate on my PC and it is pretty slow, resuming windows takes a while.

However sleep mode is faster and works well.

yes I use this all the time, why would you want to lose your session and reboot every time you turn off your pc? It's hardly a new feature, been using it since windows 2000, if anything the Vista implementation is the most annoying of all as instead of a progress bar when hibernating the monitor just shuts off, and there is also no progress bar on restore.

Well sleep is instant and I use it all the time and all it does is keep power to the RAM right?

Use Hibernate all the time on my pc and laptop, one thing I do miss is the progress bar as some times my pc takes what feels like an enternity to shut down.

Well, it's basically switching the machine off completely so it'll use next to no power.

Yes I find that really annoying too ..... my laptop sometimes fails to hibernate properly and I'm left with a blank screen and no information whether it's hung part way through hibernating or what ... at least with XP you had some idea what was going on.

Yep, I use Sleep for my PC as it's far, far quicker to end and resume. I use Hibernate on my notebook though as it's a bit quicker than a cold start, and obviously uses no power.
