Can anyone help me: I don't want to keep turning my computer on and off all the time because I heard it's bad for it's health, but when I put my computer into sleep or hibernate mode, my fans stay on. They are pretty loud, so they can be quite annoying.

How can I make it so that my fans turn off during hibernation or sleep?

you should be fine switching your pc off at least once per day, so I wouldn't worry about it. Don't know about the fans, hibernate/sleep work fine for me on V64U.

wild guess: Have you wired up the fans directly to a molex/3-pin converter? rather than to the mobo?

I usually switch it off overnight, but when I have to study, the sound of the fans puts me off. If I remember correctly, I did hook up the fans to molexes. Is that the problem?

I have an Antec 900 with an EVGA 780i, btw.

No, it should shut them down. Sounds like it could be BIOS related have you got s1&s3 enabled?

TBH there are two schools of thought. One is to leave it on all the time causes less stress on the components, whereas switching it on and off is when the power surges and can cause damage.

Mine is on 24/7 but I change my PC about every 18 mts but some parts in it, such as the case, are 4 years old.

Which mode do you actually mean?

Standby - yes fans can sometimes be on

Hibernate - no fans should not be on. The computer should save current data and then switch itself off completely.

PK!

Both mate. The fans stay on in hibernate and sleep mode. I just checked, and my fans are connected directly to my PSU (the 3-pin plugs - not molex).

Sounds like Vista having trouble with hibernate again. I had a lot of issues with that a few months ago...do you have SP1 installed? I don't bother anymore anyway, it takes so long to hibernate you may as well shut down. And since hibernation is effectively turning the PC off, it doesn't save the components any stress either.

I thought Hibernate and Stand-by had been replaced with "Sleep", which effectively puts the PC in Stand-by for a while (~30mins) and after that goes in to Hibernate.

Could it be that the fans stay on in this initial stage, and then get turned off after hibernate kicks in, or are they still on after a few hours?

I haven't left it on sleep long enough to find out.

Is it really ok to just keep turning it on and off again, because that seems like the easiest option - it's just that I heard doing that damages components.

exactly. just shut-down, bud, save some whales :)

It's probably because your filesharing on your network. I had this problem and my computer wasn't fully going into sleep, it was keeping the HDD's etc running so it could continue sharing across the network.

Try this:

Right click desktop
Personalize
Screensaver
"Change power settings"
Whichever power plan is selected, choose "change plan settings" below it
Change advanced power settings
Click Multimedia>Allow the computer to sleep

Worked for me :)
