Vista - How to stop it indexing and turning off some processes?

run services.msc and maybe have a look at msconfig

I dont know why you'd want to turn off indexing though, it will only do its thing when the comp is idle.

Run services.msc.

Indexing is performed by the 'Windows Search' process. Find it within the list, double click to open and then stop the process. Also, change the startup type to 'disabled' to stop it starting up on boot. This does not in anyway affect the normal search function within Windows, it just disables the index.

The only other thing that I usually disable is the system restore (available as a tab in one of the control panel windows, I forget where).

As I've got lots of memory in my main machine and I do not reboot often, I do not usually bother to disable any startup programs.

That may be true, but if you have a large amount of files then the indexing takes a hell of a long time to complete. As it is indexing so many files, it will ultimately reduce the working life of the drive. Also, if you do not make use of Windows Search often, then the benefit of indexing is lost.

I downloaded all of Black Vipers lists to tweak my rigs. You may be surprised at how much you can turn off without losing functionality. Windows, no matter which version, always runs services that simply are not needed.
