Heres an interesting question:

Can i take a Vista32 install which is currently on an IDE drive and image it onto a RAID-0 SATA pair (if the raid/sata drivers were already installed in the OS)

I ask as i am currently building a new box but i want to use the disks out of my current desktop (which for the time being are in use), so to get up and running im using an IDE drive so i can make sure everything works ok.

I wouldnt have thought it would work no - and to be honest dont you want to get the best out of your hardware by doing a fresh install?

(I grant you that if the image was taken just after a fresh install its the same thing) but personally I wouldnt do it :)

I'm currently in the same situation. I had Raid 0 running Vista a few month back. I formatted and went back to one disk as I was using the second disk for something else. However I wish to go back to raid0.

My thoughts, the reason why I think it won't work is when you copy the image over to the Raid0 volume and then try to boot Vista is that vista will look for the orignal chipset to boot. (Non-raid)
...but I was thinking about booting to the Vista repair console, scanning for errors and maybe repairing the installation??

Give it a go mate.

I have done this with Acronis both ways round (from Sata to Raid and from Raid to Sata and also from IDE to Raid), worked fine.

As you said above make sure you already have the Sata/Raid drivers installed and don't forget to change the boot device in the Bios if needed.

If you were changing Mobo then that would be a deferent story.

Very true, although, server 2008 enterprise managed to boot ok moving from one box to another (yes its licenced under MSDN), for an actual change of hardware i'd do a fresh install, but just moving where it boots from i don't think needs it.

I acronis quite a lot so i'll just do that after i've got it running nicely, worst comes to the worst it's a reinstall, which is a pain but not the end of the world - there is no personal/important data on my desktop machine.
