Hi.

Would changing any of the indexing options for Vista, like adding more than C:, and making it index cabs/zips slow Vista down at all? Or is it likely to be a one time slowdown while it initially indexes?

Im finding that its not finding most of my files atm.

if you turn off indexing your searching will be a little slower
but the HD will load progs faster.Give it a try

I've added a lot of extra folders to be indexed and i've not noticed any difference.
Well i decided to add every drive/partition i have to the index.
I suppose i can allways remove them if problems occur. :).

Doesn't it only index when the system's idle anyway?
Thats what im hoping. After its done its initial index, it should rarely have to do so again should it?

Why would programs load faster turning it off?
It makes no sence.
Indexing creates a database of your files that can quickly be searched rarther than scanning the HDDs which takes longer.
Loading a program has NOTHING to do with that process at all.

From what I read, having indexing on does slow the process of commands like open, close ect.. If you hardly ever use the windows search facility its not worth having it on.

Where have you read that?
Because it makes no sence whatsoever, because of how indexing works.

Search is one of the best and most usefull things on vista, considering programs start instantly I really dont think it makes any decerable difference to have it off.
