Vista infinite Blue Screen loop

Friend asked me to have a look at his laptop but this one has me stumped quite frankly and before doing a complete reinstall, thought I would ask on here.

He was having the odd freeze up, nothing major and not too often. Ive had the laptop a few days.

Tonight tried clicking "Run as administrator" on a program - instant Blue screen and now it won't even boot up, even in safe mode.

Any clues of what to try before formatting?

if you have the vista disk try and do a repair and see if you can get it to boot again.

what happens when you boot the laptop? any errors or anything or does it just sit on a black screen?

I am going to see if the owner has a disc today. When you boot, the laptop gets to the vista loading bar, then flashes up quickly with a blue screen so quickly, then goes black and restarts

when the laptop boots can you press F8 to bring up the boot options?

try safe mode and see if it boots or if it has the option try the "last known good configuration" and see if that helps at all.

if you can get in to safe mode maybe do a system restore back to before the blue screen started and see if this then allows you to boot normally
