Hi everyone

I have a new PC that i built but when i go to load VISTA onto it the install takes forever
It boots into the install and the part that takes forever is when its loading up the language selection and which version of Vista you have - i use the same disk at work on HP workstations and they fly through this part
I have a QX6850 processor and 8GB of Ram with a 1TB WD HDD running on a ASUS P5N-T DELUXE MOBO

This litteraly takes 20+ minutes to get to the hard disk selection which doesnt seem quite right to me....

Any suggestions anyone?

TIA

yeah i am - is that whats causing this then?
Is there anyway around it??

Im using a Sony DRU-190S if that makes any difference

Asus board here too, and same thing. Its hanging with NO indication with whats going on, and no hard drive activity. I have an IDE CD-ROM.

Installing on my pc takes forever, did on my old pc too, the actual os runs like a dream though apart from booting up, dont understant why the install is so slow.

Booting up is so slow too. And so is update installs/configuring. Im thinking of going back to xp because of it.

I had this exact same problem using a SATA dvd-rw with Vista, the install took about 4 hours on an Athlon X2-6000 with MSI mobo. Also actually in windows verifying burned discs would take literally hours, or installing software from dvd etc. I tried new chipset drivers etc but nothing seemed to fix the problem. I have now changed to an IDE burner and everything is perfect, very strange indeed. Incidentally i'm using a SATA HDD but this doesn't seem to cause any problem whatsoever. Can anyone shed any light on this as it seems a common problem but seldom discussed?

Booting up here takes between 11 and 30 bars on the splash screen and after installing windows updates its even slower, same for you? I moved to server 2008, 2 and a half bars loading so far and everything is smoooth.

+1 for slowness when installing via a SATA Optical drive

I gave up in the end and used an IDE one, and its MUCH faster

Not quite as long with the splash screen but otherwise the same yea. Server 2008 the same as vista?

You tried changing a setting (can't remember which one) to AHCI in the BIOS, works a lot better than the standard setting (IDE) for SATA drives.

Seems it, you gotta enable some stuff at first but it does seem the same, trying to get some physx nv drivers for it to work though is abit of a pain atm.

i have started another thread on this but didnt have a very good response. i can confirm that i had the same problem and i was using a sata pioneer dvd rw, and it took nearly 45 mins to install vista, the screen froze lots of times when installing, i took out my sata dvd rw and replaced it with a ide dvd rw and everything is running smooth now
also apparently the asus mobos dont like all there memory slots filled up hope this helps http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17890133

also have you updated to the latest bios? i had to do this as my Habu mouse wouldnt boot when plugged into usb ports it seems that the asus P5n-E sli has many problems im regretting buying it now to be honest

A quick note, I gave your suggestion a try Furton. Stuck in my other SATA burner and changed the bios setting to AHCI, but it just causes windows to blue screen on bootup. Could be just this board is dodgy, praps it will work for others?

You need to install the AHCI drivers in Vista before you change the BIOS settings, however I'm not sure how to do that, I just did a full re-install which might be your best solution.

it seem it prefect fast when install Vista x64 - I used Samsung SH203 BN dvd-writer with lightscribe (SATA) and begin 2GB and then install - once you done then install MS fix patch for support over 3GB >> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777 then shut down and add 2GB or more then it will speed up.

I dont use IDE as Ive disabled IDE 0, IDE 1 and Floppy as I leave SATA-II as default, i only used SATA -II for 2 Samsung 1TB and Samsung dvd writer -- it still run so fast.

OK I managed to get this all sorted out, by following these instructions you can install AHCI without reinstalling windows.
1. Exit all Windows-based programs.
2. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
3. If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
5. In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
7. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
8. Reboot the PC and change from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS.
When windows boots up (without blue screening) it will now install the device drivers and work proper. By going into device manager you can also update the driver with one of your own as normal too. Hope this helps anyone out who's ripping their hair out like I was :)
