Vista install hangs at "windows is loading files"

OK, I managed to get past that problem by switching the dvd_rom to Pri-slave instead of sec-master. Now it won't get past the CD-key bit, it just freezes.

You may have a hardware problem, so you're going to need to state what the hardware is.
