Behind you... Naked!
Ah, I just need to have a moan really.

My Server is this

Gigabyte MA78G-DS3H
Phenom 9550
4x1GB Geil 6400
PNY 8800GTS
Audigy 2 ZS + LiveDrive

C: = Hitachi 80GB ( Windows + Utils )
D: = Seagate 400GB ( Programs & Games )
E: = 2 x Seagate 1TB ( Media + ISO Images of Game Disks etc )
F: = WD 320 ( other misc junk )

E: is a network shared with my main PC downstairs as its N:

Now, this PC was running XP64 and it was fantastic. I recently upped it to Win7 ( 64 Bit ) and it was brilliant. No arguements.

Now, I kind of run out of legal licences now, so, given that its only used as a file server, an MP3 player when Im in the LAN room and the odd game when Im playing the kids on theirs, I decided that I can just put Vista back onto it so the kids will all have Windows 7.

What a sodding mistake!

First of all, I have not yet been able to stream any video file at all without it farting, spitting and whistling at me. The only way I can actually watch anything, is if I copy it onto the desktop of my main PC first.

When I did this, I did it with a 200MB file and it took close on an hour to copy... In fact it seemed to hang but for me seeing a small bar of about 1 pixel change to 2 pixels, nothing actually showed up and then it eventually said that it would take 55 minutes... It did indeed take about an hour.

Its not the networking thats the issue because I tried to watch a video upstairs on it directly from E: to KMP and it was no better.

I try playing an MP3 and I might get through it but the second and third just keep pausing all the time.

I bloody hate Vista

Sorry I just had to have a whine cos now I am going to have to buy yet another licence for Windows 7, but what I am doing next time ( I was going to do it this time but with Vista being what it was, I was 50-50 on Windows 7 ) is buy the server and client licences or at least multipacks to save afew quid.

TBH for the duties you have it running i would go with Linux and a SAMBA share, proven and reliable and millions of tutorials on the interwebs to get it running.

(and yes I do know we are in the windows forum ;))

You did update vista fully didn't you?

Of course, although I have been wondering if Vista is actually available in SP2 Flavours, or if vlite/nlite has been able to intergrate it yet?

LOL. Yes, actually for a while, when my PCs were all XP64, I ran my server ( Then it was my NF7S & Barton 2500 ) with Mandrake 8 then 9 and it was flawless.

I upped to Ubuntu and again, it was great for a while, until Vista and Win 7 came along and then it started going all downhill, I could not get it to connect, they could not see each other and eventually I decided to go with Windows.

Since I was upping the main PCs to Vista when they would go, I had spare XP64 Licence, so I went with that, but then, since Im upping them all to Win7, I went with win7 and again, its perfect with win7, however the plan of going back to Vista on that was simply because I have spare Vista licences but I needed the Win7 one for one of the other machines.

I know its juggling etc, Im just trying to get the best solution with the licences I have, without being illegal... Which is hard when you own over a dozen PCs

Plus, with Windows, I can, when I need to, play games with the kids on that PC without having to use yet another one ( My electricity bill is over £70 a week ) so putting linux on that PC now is not going to happen I dont think?
