Vista installation - Missing CD/DVD device driver?

In January I purchased Vista Ultimate x86 and installed it on a partition so I could dual boot between it and XP Pro. All went ok and for the last few months I've been using Vista without any problems only going back into XP for BF2142 and Trackmania.

This morning my new setup arrived (Gigabyte DS3, Intel E2160, OCZ ram) and I set about fitting the new components. Rather than go down the dual boot route again I decided to stick with Vista alone.

I booted from the DVD, waited patiently, chose my location, language and keyboard setting before it got to the Repair or Install screen. I chose install but a few seconds later a box appeared saying there was a missing CD/DVD device driver and asked me to insert the appropraite cd, floppy disc or removale device. The only options available to me were "Browse", "Rescan" or quit installation. The "next" button was greyed out.

Obviously the DVD drive is working perfectly so why does it get to the same point every time and say there's a device driver missing for the optical drive??

Anyone else had this problem?

I think I had this problem with the beta I seem to remember that I just unplugged the dvd drive I was using and used another one to install. The drive worked fine once Vista was installed.

this is a common issue, with various forums suggesting allsorts of fixes that dont work. After much searching and reading I discovered the easiest way to resolve this is to install XP, then install Vista from the XP desktop. You then select the option to install to the XP drive and it will install perfectly. The XP installation will be trashed to a folder called Windows.Old when you finally get into Vista.

This was the only way I could install the enterprise edition (from University), however my fully purchased OEM Vista64 had no such problems.

As far as I've seen on these boards (similarly to my Asus P5B-E Plus), it's down to the BIOS.

Update to the latest, and the problems will disappear. Vista doesn't like the old BIOS for the JMicron PATA controller (for the DVD drive). I updated my BIOS to the latest, and this problem vanished.

I'm using the latest Bios.

I've tried all I can think of and I'm still getting the error..

I get the same problem, did you ever manage a fix?

I had a IDE dvd drive and it wouldnt work so i thought id buy a SATA dvd drive to see if that will fix it but no luck, not even in bios or device manager :/

I've tried everything mate but no success.

The IDE drive shows in BIOS but I keep getting stuck at that screenshot. I've stuck every driver I can think of onto a USB stick and vista installation finds them and appear to proceed but then the messages appears yet again.

Hmm not good. I guess i will format and see how that goes, ive only been up and running a few days and since i cant install much without my drive im not going to lose much :p

I am experiencing the same problem on my new media centre build.

Additional sympton is that the boot up time a very long time. Its like its losing the CD/DVD drive during the boot up process. Its in the BIOS, and will install from it, then proceeds to lose it during the install process.

Currently using K9N SLI Platimun (Nvidia 570 chipset), Vista Ultimate, Pioneer DVR-212BK (Sata), Hitach 7K500 (Sata).

If you manage to get past in the install process, it has a habit of losing the optical drive during boot up (You can identify it by taking a long time to boot up).

I have done the following

1. Changed the sata cable.
2. Changed the optical drive to another exactly the same one.

If I leave it disconnected, then my boot times are back to being very snappy.

I did discover this thread ...

http://www.randomfix.com/2007/04/12/windows-vista-–-missing-cddvd-rom-drive/

Now since the loss of the optical drive is occuring installation, then I am not sure this will work, since its a bit bloody quick for this to be happening. But who knows. I will be trying this one tonight.

Also its not happening all the time. I have started checking that I haven't knocked the cable while my hands are in the case. But I have to be honest its bloody annoying.

Solution
1. Try a IDE Optical Drive
2. Go on a murderous rampage.
3. Try another Sata drive.
