Vista installation problems - Error code:0x80070017, Please help

Posting this on behalf of a friend:

I tried to add the OS windows Vista onto my Computer, it deleted my current OS which was windows XP and then failed To install leaving me with a blank computer, Vista copies the files but when it gets to extracting them it doesn't move from 0% and then i get an error box with error code Error code 0x80070017, i have tried to put windows XP back on but that keeps on failing aswell, i am TOTALLY clueless, any help would be appreciated, thanks. We have also tried multiple disks to see if it was scratched, I set the bios back to defaults, and even tried booting xp from a usb pen, but it all still fails.

Already seen that cheers.

We've cleaned the disc and tried several others, do you think it could be the cd drive?

If so we'll put mine into his pc and try it out

Worth a try, are you mixing sata & ide drives, or are they the same. One said that made a difference.

Both of the current drives are IDE, my cd drive will be sata though, will that be a problem?

Shouldnt be, but was mentioned in one post, think it was more a primary/secondary mix up.
