Vista installation size?

Hi all, hoping you can help. I'm preparing to re-install XP onto a new hard-drive I've got, and want to set a partition dedicated to Windows and my program files, as I've got now. However, I want to plan ahead for Vista (won't switch for a good few months, though), so what size is the average Vista installation likely to be? I'll probably be using Home Premium, if that helps things.

My current partition for XP is 20GB, but I do the stupid thing and keep My Documents and a 1.5GB downloads folder on that partition too (my music, games etc are all on other drives or partitions). If I were to change my ways and keep my documents and downloads on another partition or drive and just leave the Windows partition for Windows itself and whatever programs I install, what size partition would you recommend? 15GB maybe? Just don't want Vista to be choked on space at a later time, and I don't like the idea of resizing existing partitions after they're created either.

Thanks for any help.

The installation *process* requires 15Gb, the final install size is less than that.

Ultimate with Office 07 installed along with plenty of other junk comes to 10Gb here.

Not sure how you've managed that, my Business and Office 2007 install is using approx. 15GB.

It evidently hadn't finished adding up - it's nearer 15Gb. I imagine x86 is smaller though.

I've got a trial version of Office 2007 and it's 250MB...is that about right? I'll be getting the Student version when it's released, but it's 'only' got Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote so I can't imagine it'll be huge.

Maybe 20GB will do it then. I'll do a bit more looking around I think.

When installing Vista Ultimate, it said it required 6gb, so i dont know where you guys are getting your figures from

it does say 15GB but the actual vista (ultimate) install only takes 6GB, as the guy above said. just because it says 15GB min it doesnt actually mean that.

The reason (approx): The install is image based. It copies the install image from the disc to your HDD, then it expands it and deletes the original image when it's finished. This requires significantly more space than the end result.

Vlite reduced vista ultimate to 675MB so there must be lots of crap on there. Probably loads of space taken up by the aero theme.
