vista just, broke?

Pc crashed using 3dmax, so I hard rebooted. Simple, no problems...

It restarted, logged me in auto (im the only user acc) and its logs in as "Tom" which is fine, but is linked to a user documents called "Temp".

Its basically logging me in but the backend of the user (my documents etc) is empty.


How do I fix? I cant del the user folder, says I don't have permission.

Halp, its making working on uni work rather hard :/
 
anyone please? Its getting slightly frustrating! Tried a normal reboot, nothing. Tried fiddling with user accounts and nothing :/
 
im not 100% clear - are you saying that you need to get the stuff that was in mydocs back? what was it you tried to delete but couldnt? is vista behaving itself otherwise but mydocs is missing? im not sure what you mean by "linked to a user documents called "Temp" - pls try to describe a bit clearer
 
Hi

normally a Temp profile is created when a large filename over 256 characters is in the profile. Try searching through the temp internet files, or clear them :)

laso make sure your profile isnt set up by Roaming by accident, not too sure how to check this through Vista though, sorry
 
to clear myself up:


  • I am user "Tom"
  • Usually login and all my docs are in c:\users\tom etc (or whatever the dir is :P)
  • Pc crashed, restarted, opened with a fresh looking vista install as in desktop, no document files etc, even though it says I am logged in as "Tom". (I actually wet myself at this moment, nearing uni hand in time!)
  • I look in the \user dir and theres now a folder called Temp which is what this instance of logon is using.
  • The \user\tom directory is still there however.
  • I cant login as a new user (created say user1 to test) and delete the "Temp" user docs as it says I dont have permissions (but I'm admin etc)
Its annoying as my docs are linked to the account (opening files req searching and i just dont have time with the amount of files im using), also progams havent got their settings/couldnt even find google chrome!.

I'll have a look through for a large file name when im home and report back :)
 
everything seems fine, cant find any long file names in temp files, hardware is ok.

Its randomly created some restore points though, so ill try and backup my work then restore. Hope it doesnt break it! :D
