hi i was wondering if i could use my vista ultimate disc to install vista on a laptop but use the activation from the laptop instead of using my key, both are oem but mines ultimate and laptops is basic (i think)

I tried something similar a while back, but with XP, and it wouldn't work.

I needed the exact oem version that the laptop key was tied to. People said I should contact the laptop manufacturer but I couldn't really be bothered with all that so I just installed a spare copy of XP on it with a new key.

Plus you have the basic and ultimate versions, maybe it will work but my money at this stage would be on it not working.

I believe that the Vista disks have all versions on. If you install without entering the product key it will ask which version you want to install. Pick the one that you have the key for and when the install is finished then enter your key and activate.
