Well I have been running Vista Ultimate for a few weeks now and it seems very stable. I do have one little query on it, though, and wopndered if anyone knew the answer.

The Login screem just shoq the avatar for the registered users and a password screen underneath. Is it possible to chnage this to the old style of login in NT/200/XP with a blank pair of fields for username and password?

Enable or disable secure logon (CTRL+ALT+DELETE )

It's important to keep your computer as secure as possible. One way to do so is to enable secure logon so that you are required to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to log on. Using secure logon provides an additional layer of security for your computer by ensuring that the authentic Windows logon screen appears. When secure logon is enabled, no other program (such as a virus or spyware) can intercept your user name and password as you enter it.

  1. <LI class=step>Click to open Advanced User Accounts.
    GetContent.aspx
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, select the Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete check box, and then click OK.
I think this should work.

No it doesn't hide the usernames. There used be a Security MMC snap-in in XP where you could set it. I can't even find it in Vista.

This works - I just tried it.

Instructions for Setting DontDisplayLastUsername

  1. Launch Regedit.
  2. Navigate to:
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Policies\System\DontDisplayLastUserName
    Set: DontDisplayLastUsername = 1
  3. Tip: In regedit, click on the Edit menu, 'Find': DontDisplayLastUsername
  4. To see the effect, try a Logoff / Logon to the Vista Machine
  5. Double check the logic of 'don't display the last username' (1 = Yes: don't. Whereas, 0 = No: Do)

Thanks very much for that. For an operating system to sell to businessI would have thought they would have made it mre secure than the default. Oh, well its Microasoft I suppose.
