Vista lost internet connectivity - sort of

For some reason, Vista has completely stopped working with IE or FF.

If I load IE of FF, I get a cannot connect message (IE) or a blank page (FF). When I close the program, it tells me it's crashed and to close program. Messenger does the same thing.
If I try to run a VNC session to another computer, I get an error message unable to open socket.

If I run a cmd prompt, I can ping a URL or an IP address, but neither browser will let me access either. Windows update will connect and download an update, and I have sidebar gadgets (such as radio players) that work with no problems at all.

I've repaired the connection several times, and otherwise windows does not diagnose a problem. Tried setting my ip/dns settings manually also.

Oddly enough however, if I use the setup a connection option from Network Centre, it tells me I'm already connected to a network and if I click the browse internet now button, it loads IE and works fine. But if I open IE myself, it's still b0rked.

I'm really stumped by this one, some stuff works, and the stuff that doesn't crashes after I try. I've double checked any windows firewall settings, and anything else that I can see. My other PC works with no problems, same as the laptop. If I reboot the PC into XP, it works fine there too!

What about Malware? Is there anything going around at the moment? I've tried a scan with NOD32 and it doesn't pick anything up.

Edit: I forgot to add, I can also browse my network and access files over LAN without a problem

Ok, I've just done a system restore to earlier this evening and it's working again now.

I'm curious to know what was causing it though
