Hi all,
Has anyone else had a low memory warning from Vista yet? I have Home Premium 64bit OEM with 2GB of RAM and just got a message asking me turn off some programs to save memory!

I had Dreamweaver v8.01, Firefox, RapidCSS and Azureus open at the time. That doesn't bode well for running something like Oblivion.

Not yet, but Vista 64 does gobble RAM something rotten. But then again - this is a 64 bit operating system capable of running more than 100GB of RAM! To Vista 64, 2GB is a bare, bare minimum.

There are 3GB of RAM on this PC and with Opera [4 tabs] open, Avast running a virus scan, MSN, Skype and Need For Speed Most Wanted running I have 49% or RAM being used. I imagine if I had 2GB it may be slightly more dodgy.

Did you check task manager to see what was using the most memory? I have found Firefox and Azureus both tend to use a lot of memory and now use uTorrent and IE7 which seem to use a lot less.

I heard on CLICK's news section that m$ said it was buggered still as it was using to much memory, was to much of a system hog, and the first service pack will sort it out, but they are following tradition of eariler OS, so the 1st service pack will be around 11 months after Vista launch, the 30th Jan, as it was 11 months after XP came out that SP1 appeared for it, i know it was only CLICK, but still, if your getting a low memory warning there could be some truth in that.

Before I changed my page file usage, vista was set to use two and a half gigs or something like that. I changed it to use a different partition but still allowed windows to manage the size, it's now over four gigs!

You have to remember that 32bit apps running under 64bit as far as windows is concerned, will use 30% more ram than if they were running on a 32bit system because of the Windows-On-Windows thing they use to make them run at all.

might be an idea to give readyboost a go.

you could try buying one of these to see if it helps

Thanks for the link, a 2GB version was something I was thinking about as its a lot cheaper than another 2GB of GEIL but still I might go with expanding to 4GB soon. I read a lot of USB Flash Drives don't seem to work with ReadyBoost, I don't know why.

No I didn't take note of which programs were the hogs although I did look in there and the resource monitor. It said I was using 1.5GB of RAM at the time and I have 2GB.

I would point the finger at azurus, it just soaks up memory, give u torrent a try.

Never even heard of the ready boost, great idea. will defo have to pick up one of those
