For no apparent reason IE and firefox are just unable to connect to webpages, FF gives no error page or anything, IE just says can't connect. i can still connect and download from windows update, connection says its active, dhcp table in draytek router can see the computer, other computers on the network are absolutely fine.

now obviously my computer is connected, i just can't for the life of me figure out why the pages won't work in ff/ie. reinstalled both, reinstalled network drivers, reboots x infinity.......

at first when neither page would connect, internet options>connections>setup give options browse internet now or setup connection anyway. now right after the problem happened using that option gave me internet back in IE but not firefox. but couple reboots later and FF being reinstalled and i can't get IE to work either.

any ideas? if i can't find a fix i guess i'll try a repair install and hope its just some option got pooped, but, i can't think what, it was probo working from last reboot for a couple days maybe.

oh, both ff and IE both give error windows like this program has stopped working, close it now type things. nothing else is wrong, games run fine, was overclocked and games were running fine indicating hardware is ok(probably).

I had this problem. I was advised to forward port 80 (tcp) on my router.
Not done it for a while now.

gave it a try but didn't do anything. theres something just plain old weird going on, the only thing is i hadn't installed or done anything in a couple days before internet semi died. if nic had failed, or memory caused corruption of drivers then i'd understand, but windows update can work and http connections can't?

shoulda said, had been running windows firewall, mainly as forgot to disable it. disabled that, also set my comp to dmz zone on the network so router shouldn't of been messing with anything at all. trying a restore point now, though that lovely restore point i made right after first install before any drivers the vista install put on and it wasn't there, overwritten by other restore points, all from today, this morning installed ntune and a windows update(only defender update iirc) and so no idea if this will help.

i was gonna just do a normal xp type repair install, but the repair options were like, startup repair to fix anything stopping windows loading, which isn't it, restore point, or complete pc restore from a backup, but no old style repair install. though maybe i went with a wrong option from the install dvd.
