OK, duhno if you've been following my htreads but re-installing Vista with Xp but today I have an urge to get along with vista this time.
So in short how to i make sure i dont get
"programme x has stopped working.
check online for solutions.
do absolutely ntohing (same as above)"

or random blue screen restarts

I understand I need to make sure i have latest drivers- how do I go about checking? Just go through each website of the hardware components?
what would i all need to check?
mobo- sound, network etc is all part of the mobo or will i need to do individual parts- eg sound, network etc
graphics card
optical

anything else, and any tips to stop software crapping out on me?

Please post your system specs here (mobo manufactuer, chipset and model, graphics card, any other PCI or PCIx cards you have in the machine) as this will allow people to help you out a bit more.

Go through each part and make sure you have the latest Vista drivers. Don't forget anything external (e.g. printer, scanner, camera, etc.). Same with any software you rely on (particularly things like antivirus and firewall).

If you have all the pieces, you should be fine. I usually do clean installs rather than upgrades, but your choice.
