Hi, havent really fiddled about the Vista Ultimate Media Center yet other than to watch a few news clips. Was debating getting a 360 to use its extender capabilities and create a library of my DVD's on the PC upstairs and watch them downstairs.

Thought for some reason that you could simply put your DVD into the Media Center PC and it'd rip it to the library but after much head scratching this afternoon i simply couldnt find the option to do that. Then Googled and found this FAQ on the Microsoft site:

Q: Does MEC 05 allow me to rip a DVD to my hard drive to watch it later and/or watch it via. a MCE extender? If so, what file format is best for these ripped DVDs?
A: Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 does not allow for you to rip DVDs to your hard drive, and ripped DVDs in their raw format can not be watched over Extenders.

(I assume this is the same for the Vista version?)

So basically to get it into Media center do i have to mess around with DVD Shrink/Decrypt types of software? And if so does that Q&A mean i wouldnt be able to watch them downstairs using a 360 anyway?

Thanks.

I use Magic DVD Ripper to get my dvd's onto the pc. It takes between 5-10 mins for each dvd and it is ripped straight into a format playable on the 360 over the extender.

Excellent, ta. So i should be able to browse my dvd library from the comfort of my sofa. Nice.

Cant believe it cant do it 'out of the box' though, i always had it in my head that this was what MC was designed for. Ah well.
