I've just installed Vista - Business (unfortunately only copy my Dad can get) 32bit.

I've noticed that there is a hell of a lot of things in Starup in MSCONFIG. Is it worth messing around here and disabling various services to improve performance or is it a risky business?

Under the startup tab you can safely disable everything, just make sure you don't disable stuff you need like firewall/anti virus and other programs you want running in the background.

Yeah thats what my next question was going to be about :D

What's imperitive that I leave enabled??

Under the startup tab, nothing is needed.

However, you might want to keep stuff such as your anti virus, firewall, mouse drivers and anything else you want to start up on boot.

It's when you play around under the services tab when stuff could potentially go wrong. If you do want to disable some stuff under the services tab I recommend ticking the "Hide all Microsoft services" box before, then you can disable whatever doesn't need to be running.

You can disable loads of the MS services without repercussion - it all depends on

a) what you need/want
b) how competent you are if it falls over

Personally, I only install services if I absolutely require them - I rip a fair few of them out, eg Search (indexing), Bit Defender.. I can't look for the names of the others, as they aren't in my install ;)

If you're confident with the insides of your OS, it's quite easy to trim a lot of the fluff from a Vanilla install :)

True, you can strip a lot of it out, but if you don't really know what you're doing it's best just to tick "Hide all Microsoft services" and go from there.
