Just done a new install of Vista. Gave the partition 25Gb (which i thought would be more than enough) and I'm down to 9.5Gb already with only a handful of programs installed! Except when i highlight all the folders in C: it only equates to 10Gb - where has the other 5Gb gone? Getting a bit annoyed/worried as i still have office and other programs to install and before i know it i wont enough to burn a DVD.

ccleaner will help clear things up a bit

pagefile is probably pretty big (don't disable it though :) )

use diskmgmt.msc to expand your partition if you need to

it's probably system restore munching the space up. disable it. and you can always set your temp folder to go another drive/partition. :)

I have found that ccleaner didn't work well on Vista. Best to use Vista's Disk Cleanup, you will find plenty more space there.

Disable system restore as well, thats what I always do to free up more space and protect Windows from viruses.

Hibernation File Cleaner - 2Gb! Never use hibernation!
4GB Hibernation File Cleaner -here

4Gb just for information about the state of the computer as it enters hibernation

yeah, forgot about hibernation, mine's disabled by default by vlite

sleep mode is tons better than hibernation, hibernation should only be enabled for laptop's imo.. and definitely shouldn't be enabled by default!

look in Music, Pictures, Videos folders too, and in the C:\Users\Public (Music, Pictures, Videos), and delete the sample media from them, will shave off a few hundred mb

So i guess it just saves whatever in ram went the system goes into hibernation ???

yeah, that's right

when i first read it, i thought you'd typed "it's as big as your arm" :)

to get rid of the hibernate file for good, open a proper admin command prompt and type

powercfg -h off

but like bledd, i didn't have one in the first place thanks to vlite. on a clean install, i have just over 5gb of space taken up - and 2gb of that is my page file. :D

I found something similar with Vista .Someone gave me a version of Vista to try and I installed it on a PC with a 20g hard drive .I installed no programs or anything , it was just the bare bones . On looking at the hard drive , 13gig seemed to be taken up by Vista .I could not fathom out if this was right and whether Vista should take this ammount of space up . I've been told it shouldn't .Vista's off now and XP is back on . Can someone confirm what a installation should take up .

Disk Cleanup---more options---system restore and shadow copies---clean up. That should remove all but your last system restore data from the Hard drive.
