Hi all,

I am having a little issue which I hope someone can help with. I am running a Vista ult 64bit box, directly connected to a Cable Modem for internet access. This is via the onboard NIC. I have a second NIC installed which is connected to an XP box. Vista seems to run fine on its own, but sometimes when I boot up the 2nd XP pc, during the boot up process and when XP is requesting its IP address, it can cause Vista to give errors such as "A generic host process has failed and been closed. Sometimes Aero gets messed up and I get a look which is similar to "Safe mode" for task bar, IE grey with old "Start" button. A reboot clears the issue but XP does not get its ip and sometimes shows as cable not connected when it is.

I have got a fairly fresh install of Vista, less than a month old and the XP install is brand new.

Specs:

Vista Box:
c2d e6750
Asus p5nesli
4gb ddr 2 667
8800 gts
realtek separate NIC rtl8139

XP

Acer Aspire rc500
2.80 ghz pent 4
2gb ram
sep realtek rlt 8139 nic and onboard tried

Hi Tosk, thanks for the reply. The issue is with the Vista PC and not the XP one. The process fails on Vista when the 2nd PC obtains its IP address. Its a little odd because I have a third PC with XP on which does not cause this issue at all. I am thinking the issue will be Mobo related in some way, or at least the config of parts of the Acer PC. I am currently rebuilding the Acer, I was suprised how difficult it was to dissassemble, but I have to replace its hard drive and I am removing some of its cards such as modem and TV card. Perhaps a re-re-install may fix.

yeah it could be an hardware problem you could try and use another nic card that is supported
by vista. and it if fixes the problem. you then know its the hardware.

there might be a vista fix for it. just do a search for it on there site

Well, I have installed a new hard drive in the acer pc and installed a old NIC which I know has never caused any problems for me before. I also installed Vista x86. The thing is now when the acer connects to the internet, it kills my first PC! IE crashes as does Outlook, cant get bit torrent to work, it basically borks my internet connectivity or networking on the first PC, the Acer can still browse ok and also get access to shared folders. The only way I can fix my first PC is to System restore it! I do feel this is hardware related- the Acer PC but cant think what exactly could cause it as I have swapped NICs around.

hmm what about a firewall? do you have 1 installed? if you say i can browse the net. it could be
an OS or software problem?

I feel the issue is hardware related but not sure where to start. The Acer PC (now with Vista x86) still has the same issues as when I had XP home on it. Clean install of two OS' has had this problem. Yet my third, less powerful Dell PC with XP pro installed is fine and has been for a couple of years. I can connect this to the network it will surf the net and not affect my main pc (Marvin) which is holding the ICS. It could be ICS/hardware related but I cant for the life of me figure out how to resolve. I have tired using a switching hub which does not help. I think I may have to buy a router.

I have resolved the issues!

1st network issue: It has occurred since first installing Vista back in Jan. After about 8 hours or less or more, I would lose internet connectivity. If I rebooted, this would clear the issue, also if I stopped then started "Network connections Service".
Stopping this service, also stopped ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). I noticed that when it stopped ICS, it never restarted, unless I manually started it. But this would cause the loss of connectivity again. I only noticed this yesterday after all these months! So I did a quick google search on ICS problems and found the Hotfix. I requested the Hotfix from MS and they sent me a link to it later the same night. 10 out of 10 there! I have installed this and been running the PC for over 10 hours now and no loss of connection.

2nd Network issue: This is the one I started the thread with, I remembered someone saying to me once that IPv6 can cause issues. I simply uninstalled the protocol from both the NIC supplying the 2nd PC's connection and also in the 2nd PC's NIC. I have not had a failed service since, on any machine. I have rebooted the 2nd PC many many time to try and recreate the problem, but its now rock solid!

I hope the above helps someone else as well.
